In the beginning of the book The Woman Warrior, Maxine explains how her aunt became pregnant when her husband was away so many years, that it would be impossible for her to become pregnant by him. She had an affair with another man while her husband was away. As the months passed by, the villagers started counted the months till it was time for her aunt to have the baby. The day her aunt was giving birth, the villagers came and raided their home. The broke and destroyed things in their house. Her aunt had the baby in the pigsy due to the villagers raiding the house. The next morning they found Maxine’s aunt in the family’s well with her newborn baby.
Then Maxine talks about another memory of how she followed a bird all the way to a hut. She soon was found by an old couple that were going to train her to become a warrior. It would take her 15 years of training before she could go battle, during her training to had to learn how to breathe lightly and how to survive out in the wild without having any food with her and just water. She was able to see her family through a water guard. After her training she was able to return home and go to battle.
