V- Before the book ended it would talk about how her and a couple of other girls were in the exact same classroom. But none of them would really talk any english they were made to read in front of the classroom. After that it talked about how they would stay after school and at a point she stayed and decided to go play in one of the lavatories to mess around. And one of the girls that did not speak at all was following her. Maxine would express that she did not like her at all. She did not like her pretty face and how she would fix her hair. N- Maxine hated how clean the girl was. Maxine liked tough girls that didn’t cry and had yellow teeth. Girls that looked strong. V-Once Maxine got tired of being followed by her, she started to abuse her in a way. Maxine would pull her hair, pinch her, call her stupid to the point in which the little girl cried. N- Maxine abused her to get her to talk, because the girl never talked. N- Maxine had her the girl shout before, so she wanted the girl to talk to her. But the girl didn’t talk. V- Maxine got tired of doing that to her and told her to at least stand up for herself and say stop or you are hurting me but she did not say one word. She decided to stop abusing her whenever her older sister walked in and told her that she was trying to help her after that they went home.
V- There came a part near the ending when Maxine’s mother tried to find her a husband. And they would show pictures of her to guys, they would even let them work with them but they would end up leaving. And a weird creepy guy comes along and starts following her that even her parents start to think he might be a good husband for Maxine. A few days later he leaves a box full of porn stuff in them at the shop and Maxine go furious because her parents kept trying to get her married when she did not want to marry someone yet. N- Her mother and Maxine started arguing. Her mother told her that the people that came were for her sister. That nobody would want to marry her.
K- In the last parts of the book, Maxine spoke of more of family members and some situations a few of them were in at points in time. Maxine also wrote about herself and of course ghost.Maxine wrote about a woman Brave Orchid, and her sister Moon Orchid who flew to America from Hong Kong. Brave Orchid was bringing Moon Orchid to America to find her husband that was supposed to have sent for her, which he apparently did not. Once they find him, he tells them that Moon Orchid could not be there, that he was already remarried and that no one could know she was there in America. N- Moon Orchid was crying the whole time and covering her face while Brave Orchid was talking to her husband. Her husband said that he had a new wife and a new life. That he didn’t want Moon Orchid at his house. He would keep sending her money like he has always done, but he never wanted to see her again. Then few year later, Moon Orchid turned crazy. She thought that their was mexican ghosts after her. She would disguise herself. Moon Orchid started hiding things in the house like photographs because she said that if the mexicans traced her, she didn’t want them to trace the whole family. Moon Orchid cried every time someone left the house because she thought that the mexican ghosts would get them. They ended up putting Moon Orchid in a state mental asylum.
K- My opinion on the text is that is descriptive, it is also informative on how different the customs are between America and Hong Kong and how much a person can change. I really liked this part in the section because I could get a better understanding as to differences from America to other places.
V-My opinion of this part of the story really intrigued me by the way she would write all those descriptions of how she was being mean to the little girl. The words she used helped me build an image in my mind. My favorite part was whenever the older sister walked in and she acted like nothing was going on.
N- My opinion is that this book has a lot of information about China’s beliefs. I thought that it was sad how Moon Orchids went to look for her husband and he didn’t go back with her. This book explain everything really good. My favorite part was when Maxine was freaking out because she thought that her mother was looking for someone to marry her. I thought it was mean how Maxine talked about the kid that always came to sit at their laundry.
